The theme of the symposium is
Wi-Fi Past, Present & Future
and brings together speakers who have witnessed the birth of WaveLAN, Wi-Fi pioneers who pushed the commercialization of Wi-Fi and ignited its growth to take it to the ubiquitous technology that everybody uses today. But it does not end today. Our speakers will share their visions on how Wi-Fi will further impact our future lives and society.

11:00 - 11:20 LICENCED OR UNLICENCED by Dr. Michael Marcus
Dr. Michael Marcus was advanced radio technology Evangelist at the FCC and is responsible for the availability of spectrum for the first wireless LAN products.
Mike will explain the work that lead to the acceptance of his proposal, the problems, pitfalls and success.
11:20 - 11:40 EARLY WAVELAN PRODUCTS by Bruce Tuch
Bruce Tuch was the CTO at WCND and the core developer of the WaveLAN products & early contributor to the IEEE 802.11 standard.
Bruce will share the journey from the first WaveLAN protype leading to the first IEEE 802.11 standard, how WCND managed to develop the Apple Airport product, realizing this at one third of the price level at that time, to how he assisted in the integration of wireless LANs in Microsoft Windows XP.
11:40 - 12:00 INSIGHTS ON THE FIRST YEARS OF IEEE 802.11 by Vic Hayes
Vic Hayes was Senior Consultant Standards and Regulation at WCND and co-founder and Chairman of IEEE 802.11, the Workgroup for wireless LANs. Vic will reflect on the development of the first IEEE 802.11 standard and the 802.11b extension, which formed the base of the first Wi-Fi certification.
12:00 - 12:20 BEHIND THE SCENES ON MARKETING OF WAVELAN PRODUCTS

Angela Champness was the Marketing Director at WCND and founding member of WECA, the predecessor of the Wi-Fi Alliance.
Angela played a key role in selling the first WaveLAN products and as part of the alliance came up with the “Wi-Fi” name and logo, one of the worlds’ strongest recognized brands today.

13:30 - 13:50 PERSPECTIVES ON THE IEEE STANDARDS TODAY by Dorothy Stanley
Dorothy Stanley is the current Chair of IEEE 802.11.
Dorothy will tell about the current 802.11 standards today, in particular the new IEEE 802.11 ax (Wi-Fi 6) and unveil the new projects under development.
13:50 - 14:10 WAVELAN TO WI-FI®: FROM IDEA TO PHENOMENON

Edgar will review 20 years of Wi-Fi success and discuss the newest generation, Wi-Fi 6.
14:10 - 14:40 WI-FI - MAKING THE DIFFERENCE by Cees Links
Cees Links was the General Manager of WCND.
Cees will address the breakthrough in the acceptance of Wireless LANs through the teaming-up of WCND (Lucent Technologies) and Apple Computer and the history-changing meeting with Steve Jobs. Cees will share early business plans with the challenges, as well as the success stories. And Cees has interesting and thought-provoking visionary ideas for the future.
14:40 - 15:10 WI-FI NOW AND IN THE FUTURE by Claus Hetting
Claus Hetting is the creator and host of the Wi-Fi NOW events. Claus is an experienced wireless journalist/analyst/consultant and a big promoter of public access Wi-Fi for everyone. Claus will share his views on what Wi-Fi brings to today’s society and present exciting future Wi-Fi applications, with the next great leap in Wi-Fi everywhere for everyone.

15:40 - 15:55 INSIGHTS FROM THE IEEE BENELUX by Prof. Dr. Ir. Wim van Etten
Wim van Etten is Professor Emeritus Telecom Engineering at the University of Twente, the Netherlands.
Wim will elaborate on the inside story of the IEEE Benelux activities and the Milestone Awards granted to developments in the Benelux.
15:55 - 16:10 MILESTONE DEDICATION PRESENTATION by Prof. José M.F. Moura
José Moura is IEEE President and Professor at Carnegy Melon University.
José will disclose his vision of the Worldwide Engineering Association, IEEE and the importance of the Milestone Program.
16:10 - 16:45 OFFICIAL MILESTONE AWARD DEDICATION
The IEEE Milestone Award will be dedicated on stage, at the theater, in presence of local affilations, IEEE executives, academics, industry and techology leaders, press and former employees who helped bring WaveLAN to its success.
(At a later date the Award will be mounted in the atrium of the Nieuwegein City Hall)
